The Knifemaker
The face behind Forge Works.
Hi, I’m Christoph!
My journey began when I first enrolled and studied to be a wood sculptor. During this time I learnt how to work with my hands and to operate heavy machinery – this skill set would be an asset in my later career as a knife maker.
Once I had finished my apprenticeship I worked as a chef where I had my first real encounter with knives. This hands-on experience meant that I was comfortable working with a wide range of knife types.
It wasn’t until my trip to Australia that I made my first knife.
The knife was made in my friends shed with limited tools.
I was so excited by the process and my creation that I decided to research more about the craft - this is where I realised that my first attempt was made with the wrong steel! Instead of being discouraged, this fuelled my interest to pursue the craft further.
Once I was back in Germany, I had a direction - to become a knife maker!
It took me a while to acquire all the necessary tools, and to learn the subtleties in the craft, but once I was ready, Forge Works was officially born.
It has been such a fun process. In the beginning, I worked out of my fathers garage but as my craft expanded, and my business took off I eventually took over his garage, forcing his car out into nature.
It was then that I moved into my own workshop - giving me more space to not only grow my business but to also host workshops which have given people the opportunity to make knives for themselves.
I make my knives with the intention that they will last a lifetime. A knife is a mans companion and so should always be of the highest quality no matter their function whether they are used in the kitchen, for hunting, camping, on duty or as basic EDC.
